3-tab shingles
The old flat, uniform strip shingle. It is the cheapest asphalt option and the lightest, but it also carries the shortest lifespan and the lowest wind ratings — often in the 60 mph range on the label. Stamped metal panels made to look like shingles, tile, or shake, sometimes finished with a stone-granule coating. They split the difference: the longevity and fire resistance of metal with a profile that satisfies picky HOA design guidelines. Cost lands between exposed-fastener and standing seam.

Those black streaks running down asphalt roofs are Gloeocapsa magma, an algae that thrives in Virginia's warm, humid, coastal air. It is cosmetic more than structural, but it is unsightly and common. The fix is to specify algae-resistant (AR) shingles — architectural shingles with copper or zinc granules that inhibit growth — and most reputable manufacturers now offer an AR line with a matching stain warranty. Metal roofs largely sidestep the streaking problem. If you are anywhere near the water, ask specifically for AR-rated product; it is often a small or no upcharge.
Wind on the coast
From Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore, wind uplift is the design driver. Check the shingle's wind rating and, critically, that the installer follows the enhanced nailing pattern the rating requires — a great shingle nailed wrong fails at ordinary speeds. - "Material X always boosts resale."
